For eight seasons now it's been a pretty decent show, and downright sublime at times, but you have to wonder if Stargate SG-1 isn't beginning to run out of steam. It would be hard, under the best of circumstances, to keep the show fresh and the new ideas rolling, but now the creative team has their attention split across two franchises, the venerable SG-1 and the new Stargate Atlantis. Moreover, Richard Dean Anderson has made it clear he's going to be less involved in the show.
And in what may someday be looked back on as a classic "jump the shark" moment, the second half of season eight opened with an episode called Gemini that revolving around the most tired of plot twists, the "evil twin." Not a good sign.
Let's hope the writers rise to the occasion, kill off the "evil Sam" in an episode or two, and get back to the interesting blend of sci-fi and ancient legends that made the show so innovative for so long.
PS: On a more positive note, the new Battlestar Galactica on Sci-Fi is off to a strong start --- who would ever have guessed bringing that disaster of the early 80s back would be a good idea. The actors are great, the story lines strong, and the production values are amazing. I can't keep track of how many different sets are employed. It must be in the dozens.
